JEMAI (Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry) was established in September 1962, around the time when the issue of industrial pollution manifested and became aggravated in Japan. JEMAI is a corporate body formed from 1200 member companies from a large variety of fields including electric power, iron and steel, chemicals, petroleum, electric devices, electronic devices, automobiles, machinery, and construction. Since its establishment JEMAI has conducted a variety of assessment evaluations, technical developments, and investigations with respect to the atmosphere, water quality, noise, vibration, hazardous chemical substances, and industrial waste materials as well as environmental issues including global issues related to industrial activity. JEMAI is also the organization that administers the national examination for pollution prevention managers and is active in conducting various seminars and in publishing. Moreover, JEMAI is active in disseminating technology overseas and is currently promoting projects in China, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines. In recent years, JEMAI has played a central role in the introduction and dissemination of the environment management system and ISO 14000-series related standards. The organization plays an on-going role as the secretariat in Japan for the environment management system TC207 subcommittee, SC3 Environment Label, SC4 Environment Performance Evaluation and SC5 Life Cycle Assessment and as an environment management system certified registration organization, JEMAI has achieved the evaluation registration of more than 7,000 inspectors. Moreover, JEMAI is actively involved in such activities as the development and pervasion of the life cycle assessment method, issue of guidelines for environmental reports and environmental accounting reports, production, and pervasion of DFE (Design for Environment) manuals and dissemination of the Eco Leaf environment label, research and development of Eco-Efficiency Indicators.
