The Program
The EcoLeaf program has following characteristics. Item 1, 2, 3 are basics of Type III label conforming to ISO 14025.
- Quantitative information declaration without judgment
- Conformity to ISO 14020 series and ISO 14040 series(LCA methods).
- Comparability of the declared contents, backed by set rules on data collection/processing, verification, and registration/publication called PCR (Product Category Rule)
- Flexibility by optional certification program called "System Certification" to authorize label publisher's internal operation system for label publication (data collection/processing, verification, and registration/publication systems)
- Objectivity of the declaration by independent verifiers appointed by JEMAI.
- Readability in adding assisting summary information sheet of the LCA results with product summary called P.E.A.D.: Product Environmental Aspects Information Declaration
- Accessibility to the declaration contents in offering whole EcoLeaf label contents: 3 sheets set per product in principle: a EcoLeaf website at http://www.jemai.or.jp/english/ecoleaf/pub_label.cfm .
Certain aspects of points 1 to 3 above are basic characteristics of the Type III
environmental declaration specified in ISO 14025, but points 4 to 7 are unique
to this program.
The Label
EcoLeaf label comprise the following three parts:
| "P.E.A.D." : Product Environmental
Aspects Declaration
The PEAD provides representative information on the product,
including point of environmental impacts. It should be prepared concisely but
in a highly uniform and visual way that product purchasers and consumers can easily
understand. Below the main text part, other environment-related information may
also be presented, provided that its accuracy can be confirmed.
|

|
"P.E.I.D.S.": Product Environmental
Information Data Sheet
Overall results of the LCA is presented on the PEIDS to clarify
the basis of the PEAD and to summarize the results of inventory analysis, impact
assessment, and energy consumption.
Inventory analysis, based on the LCA method, calculates and evaluates the amounts
of energy, raw materials, and environmental contaminants associated with a product
during its life cycle. Impact assessment correlates the results of inventory analysis
with indicators such as the consumption of exhaustible resources and the emission
loads that indicate the level of global warming and ozone depletion, enhancing
the ease of understanding for the general public.

"Product Data Sheet"
The product data sheet records the underlying data used in the preparation of the PEIDS. The company introducing EcoLeaf label prepares the product data sheet by describing the inputs and outputs of energy, raw materials, and environmental contaminants per product unit based on actual measurements within its direct range of influence (e.g., within its factory).
